Alt Pirineu Natural Park is the largest protected area in Catalonia: about 80,000 hectares of Pyrenean valleys between Pallars Sobirà and Alt Urgell, holding the region's highest summit, Pica d'Estats (3,143 m), and Certascan, the biggest glacial lake on the southern Pyrenees slope. It was declared in 2003 after decades of campaigning, and it continues across the French border into the Ariège regional park and, to the south-east, to the Comapedrosa park in Andorra. There is no entry fee and no gate: you drive to a valley village such as Àreu, Tavascan or Esterri d'Àneu, park, and walk. The trade-off is logistics, not tickets — trailheads are 3.5–4.5 h by car from Barcelona, buses reach only the main valley towns, and the big routes need a full day and settled weather.
