Paris in May: what to expect

May is the month Paris stops needing a coat. Daytime highs sit near 20 °C and nights near 11 °C, so a light jacket still earns its place in the evening. Rain arrives as short showers rather than all-day drizzle, and the city gets roughly 15 hours of daylight by the end of the month — sunset is late enough that you can eat dinner outdoors and still walk home in daylight.

The pattern is changeable rather than reliably sunny: a warm stretch can push past 25 °C, and a grey week can hold highs near 15 °C. Check the forecast a few days out rather than packing for an average. Heatwaves belong to July and August, not May.

May sits in the middle band for both crowds and prices. It is not August, when much of Paris empties and much of the coast fills, and it is not the deep quiet of January. Expect the Louvre, Orsay and the Eiffel Tower to be busy every day, and the Marais and Montmartre to be busy every afternoon.

The exception is the run of public holidays: 1 May, 8 May and Ascension (a Thursday in May, with many people taking the Friday too). Those weekends behave like high season — TGV seats to the Riviera, Normandy and the Loire sell out, and hotel rates in Paris rise. If your dates are fixed to a holiday weekend, book transport and beds as early as you can; if they are flexible, the middle two weeks of the month are calmer and cheaper.

May is a strong month for events in and around Paris. The big fixed points are the public holidays, which shape travel more than any single festival, plus the museum and music calendar that runs through the spring.

The Cannes Film Festival lifts prices and demand on the Riviera in mid-May, which matters if you were planning to add a south-of-France leg to a Paris trip. In Paris itself, check the current listings for Nuit des Musées (usually a Saturday in mid-May, with free late openings) and the start of the outdoor music and terrace season. Dates shift year to year — confirm before you build a day around one.

May rewards being outside. The gardens are the reason to come: the Tuileries, Luxembourg and Parc Monceau are at their best, and the rose beds at Bagatelle in the Bois de Boulogne usually peak late in the month. Long evenings make the Seine banks and the canal-side bars in the 10th and 11th worth planning around.

For day trips, May is close to ideal. Versailles is at its best before the summer crowds and heat, and the gardens are in full leaf; go on a weekday and book a timed slot. Giverny, where the gardens open for the season from spring, is a straightforward half-day from Saint-Lazare. Fontainebleau, Chantilly and the Loire châteaux are all comfortable day or overnight trips now that the weather has turned.

Pack for two seasons in one day. A light jacket or trench, a compact umbrella and one warm layer cover the cold mornings and the showers; short sleeves and comfortable walking shoes cover the afternoons. Paris is a walking city and May is the month you will walk the most, so shoes matter more than anything else in the bag.

Add sunglasses and sunscreen — the sun is stronger than the temperature suggests — and a refillable water bottle. If you plan to eat outdoors in the evening, one smarter layer is enough; Paris dress codes are relaxed but restaurants are not beachwear.

April is cooler and wetter but quieter, with the Easter school holidays adding a two-week crowd spike. June is warmer and greener with much longer days, but crowds and prices step up to high season and the Fête de la Musique lands on 21 June. If May's holiday weekends are a problem, late June weekdays are the closest substitute; if you want lower prices, April is the better trade.
