Best day trips from Paris: how to get there and what to see

Paris sits in Oxford County, western Maine, on the Androscoggin River. The practical day-trip radius is 30–60 minutes by car: river towns to the west, the White Mountain foothills to the northwest, and the lakes region to the southeast. Anything further, such as Portland or the coast, is a long half-day each way and better done as an overnight.

Fryeburg is the easiest win. US-302 runs west from Paris through farmland and river flats, and the town has a compact centre, a covered bridge nearby and the Fryeburg Fairgrounds. In early October the fair draws large crowds and US-302 slows to a crawl; go on a weekday or arrive before mid-morning. Outside fair week it is a quiet half-day with a lunch stop.

Bethel and the White Mountain foothills give the biggest scenery payoff. The drive northwest climbs into the Androscoggin valley, with Sunday River and the Mahoosuc Range beyond. Short walks and viewpoints are easy to find; longer hikes need a map, water and an early start because afternoon light goes quickly in fall. Winter visits are for skiing and snowshoeing, and the roads can be icy.

Bridgton and Norway are the lake option. Long Lake and the surrounding ponds offer swimming, kayak rentals and picnic spots, with small downtowns for coffee and lunch. Parking is usually free or cheap. Sebago Lake, further southeast, is bigger water with state park beaches; day-use fees apply in season (check).

Portland is the one city option, but at 60–75 minutes each way it eats the day. Go for the food and waterfront, not for a quick look, and expect paid parking downtown.

Most trips here are fuel, food and any entry fee. A 150–200 km loop in a mid-size car costs roughly US$10–20 in fuel at 2026 prices (check). Add US$15–30 per person for a casual lunch, and any fair, park or lift ticket on top.
