Pargas
Parainen
Give Pargas one night as a stop on the Archipelago Trail: old town, church and quarry in half a day, then push on to Nagu or Korpo.
Pargas (Parainen in Finnish) is the only real town in the Archipelago Sea, about 25 km from Turku by road on regional road 180. It is bilingual Swedish and Finnish, and English works nearly everywhere. The centre is small and walkable: a wooden old town, a medieval church, a working limestone quarry you can view from a marked spot, and a handful of museums. Most travellers use it as the first overnight on the Archipelago Trail before the ferries to Nagu and Korpo. Two nights is enough to see the town and one nearby beach or golf course; one night is enough if you are moving on.

Get around
The centre is small enough to walk: Strandvägen runs along the Kyrksundet sound from the roundabout to the marina, with the pedestrian street Köpmansgatan nearby and the old town across the sound. For anything outside town you need a bike, car or taxi; buses and coaches from Turku can be used along their routes. Bikes are for rent at Hotel Kalkstrand, Café Hallonblad and Solliden Camping, and a free cycling map covers about 12 km (7.5 mi) of local routes. The centre is small enough to walk: Strandvägen runs along the Kyrksundet sound from the roundabout to the marina, with the pedestrian street Köpmansgatan nearby and the old town across the sound. Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Firm handshake, eye contact, short and direct; avoid: Hugs and long small talk with strangers
- Silence: Let pauses be pauses; avoid: Filling every quiet moment
- Sauna: Shower first, ask before throwing water on the stones; avoid: Swimsuits in nude-only saunas, or nudity in mixed ones marked otherwise
- Home visit: Shoes off; bring flowers or pastries; avoid: Keeping shoes on indoors
- Personal space: Keep a metre's distance in queues; avoid: Sitting next to a stranger when other seats are free
- Promises: Mean what you say; Finns will; avoid: Polite 'let's meet sometime' you do not intend
Scams and watch-outs
- Föli tickets from Turku are not valid on the Pargas buses; buy a TLO ticket or a Seutu+ 24-hour ticket.
- Do not rely on a taxi late at night unless you have agreed one in advance.
- The quarry viewpoint is closed for blasting around 14:00 daily.
- Qvidja manor is private and not open to the public; only occasional events.
- Winter tyres are required Dec–Feb if you drive.
Pargas is a small, low-crime town and safe for tourists. The real risks are dark winter roads, fast traffic on rural roads if you cycle, and thin late-night taxi cover: book ahead or walk.
