  1. Before you start

Welcome to the Independence Square, Fort Zeelandia & the Waterkant audio walk in Paramaribo. 4 stops: Independence Square and the Presidential Palace, Fort Zeelandia, Palmentuin (palm garden) and St Peter and Paul Cathedral. Morning cluster: the square, the fort and the palm garden before the heat; flat, with the river breeze on the Waterkant.

Onafhankelijkheidsplein, Fort Zeelandia, the Palmentuin and the Waterkant (approximate box). Underfoot: cracked pavement and open drains; slope: flat; shade: some.

Paramaribo is a small capital with an unusual mix: a UNESCO-listed centre of painted wooden houses, a mosque built beside a synagogue, four language families at the market and a river that still organises the town.

Before you start: Keep phones and cash out of sight along the Waterkant, especially in the evening. Keep your eyes on the street, and pause the audio before you cross a road.

  2. 1. Independence Square and the Presidential Palace

    Onafhankelijkheidsplein

    Look for

    • Palace exterior

    Look for

    • Courtyard and ramparts
    • Museum rooms
    • Memorial to 1982 victims

Stop 2 of 4: Fort Zeelandia. Arrival point: Walk or taxi to the fort gate.

In 1667, after the Second Anglo-Dutch War, the Dutch took the colony, renamed the fort Zeelandia and, in the Treaty of Breda, kept Suriname while the English kept New Amsterdam, which became New York. In 1980 a military coup brought soldiers to power, and in December 1982 fifteen prominent critics were executed at Fort Zeelandia.
