Papua is the Indonesian half of New Guinea: six provinces, over 250 languages, reefs at Raja Ampat and glacier peaks in the highlands. Towns are not linked by road, so almost every move is a flight, and travel beyond the main coastal towns needs a surat jalan (travel permit) listing every place you plan to visit. Treat it as its own trip of a week or more, not a side trip from Bali.

Travel beyond the main coastal towns needs a surat jalan listing every place you plan to visit; changes mean a new permit from a main town.
The Free Papua Movement (OPM) operates in the region; past violence has targeted mining and security personnel, not tourists. Check your government's current advisory before booking.
Malaria is endemic — take precautions. Saltwater crocodiles live in lowland waterways and on beaches.
Electricity is unreliable in many places; blackouts happen. Protect devices with a fused adapter.
Internal flights cancel often for weather; never book a same-day connection to an international departure.
