Paonia is a town of about 1,450 people in the North Fork Valley, 70 mi (about 1 h 30 min) from Glenwood Springs and Grand Junction. It anchors the West Elks AVA, a wine area whose vineyards sit near 1,950 m, among the highest in North America. Downtown is a few blocks of galleries, a 1920s cinema and a brewery in a former church. Get around
Downtown is a few flat blocks and walkable. Everything else — wineries, orchards, Paonia State Park, Crawford Reservoir — needs a car; there is no local bus. Distances are short in miles but slow on canyon roads. Fill up in Paonia or Hotchkiss before heading onto the mesas.
