Panguitch
Stay 1–2 nights as a Bryce Canyon base, not a destination: 37 km to the park gate, motels on Main Street, no sights beyond downtown.
Panguitch is a small Mormon-founded town of about 1,600 people on US-89 in Utah's Canyon Country, 37 km from Bryce Canyon National Park. It works as a cheaper, quieter bed base for Bryce and the Grand Circle than the park lodges or Bryce Canyon City. Downtown is one preserved frontier block; the rest is motels, a grocery store and a grid of streets. Two nights covers Bryce properly; one night is enough if you are only passing through.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- No public transport to Bryce Canyon: without a car you are stuck.
- Summer monsoon storms hit Jul–Sep with flash-flood risk in slot canyons and on dirt roads.
- Altitude is about 2,000 m: mornings are cold year-round, even in July.
- Cell coverage is patchy on the drive to Bryce and in Dixie National Forest.
- Many restaurants close on Sunday and shut early in winter: check before you arrive.
Low-crime small town; the real risks are driving (wildlife at dusk, winter ice on UT-143), summer monsoon flash floods and altitude plus cold mornings. Keep water in the car and tell someone your route off US-89.
