Set up your phone before you land. Panama uses the same LTE and 5G bands as North America and Europe, so most unlocked phones work. Buy an eSIM online before departure or a physical SIM at Tocumen airport or a mall; you need your passport either way. Coverage is good in Panama City, Colón, David and along the Pan-American highway, and weak on the outer San Blas islands and in parts of the Darién, which you should not visit anyway.
For getting around Panama City, Uber and InDrive both operate and are usually cheaper than street taxis. Drivers sometimes cancel when traffic is bad or when the pickup is awkward, so allow a few minutes. Outside the capital, ride-hailing thins out fast: in Boquete, Bocas del Toro and El Valle you will rely on local taxis, hotel transfers or WhatsApp arrangements with drivers.
Google Maps is the default for navigation and works well on the Interamericana and in the city. Rural roads, island tracks and some Boquete back roads are incomplete or wrong, so treat it as a guide, not gospel. Waze is popular with locals for traffic in Panama City. For the metro and Metrobús, Moovit gives routes and times; you still need to buy and top up the physical metro card at stations.
WhatsApp is not optional. Boat captains to the San Blas islands, lodge owners in Bocas, shuttle drivers and tour operators all coordinate by WhatsApp, often with voice notes in Spanish. Save numbers as contacts as soon as you book. A translation app with a downloaded Spanish pack helps for menus, pharmacies and taxi negotiations; Google Translate and Apple Translate both handle offline Spanish reasonably.
For money, your bank's app matters more than any local one. Cards and contactless work in Panama City hotels, supermarkets and restaurants, but smaller towns and islands are cash-first, so check your bank's foreign transaction fees and set travel notices. Yappy is the local mobile payment system and is widely used by Panamanians, but signing up normally requires a Panamanian bank account, so most visitors cannot use it.
