Palmerston North is a flat, compact university city of about 80,000 in the Manawatū, 2 hr by car or a weekday train from Wellington. Its sights sit within a short walk of The Square, so a single night or a lunch stop on the drive between Wellington and Hawke's Bay covers it. Base here only if you are visiting Massey, the Manawatū Gorge tracks or family in the region.

Get around

The centre is flat and walkable: The Square, Te Manawa, the Rugby Museum and the library are within 10 minutes of each other. Connect buses run seven cross-city routes at least every 30 min from about 06:30 to 21:00, all meeting at the Main Street bus hub east of The Square. Cycling is easy on the flat; Fitzherbert Avenue has a busy cycle route to Massey. A car helps for the Esplanade, the gorge and day trips.
