Palmeiras
Use Palmeiras as the gateway to Chapada Diamantina National Park and Vale do Capão: 2–3 nights, with a 4×4 ride to the valley for hiking and waterfalls.
Palmeiras is a small town in Bahia's Central South region, the main access point for Chapada Diamantina National Park. Most visitors pass through on their way to Vale do Capão (Caeté-Açu), 22 km away, where the park's best hikes start — including Cachoeira da Fumaça, Brazil's tallest waterfall. The town itself has a few sights (Morro do Pai Inácio, Vale do Pati) but the real draw is the national park. Plan 2–3 nights to see the highlights.

4×4 trucks from the rodoviária (bus station) to Vale do Capão run at least three times daily, R$25 (2026 estimate). Within the park, hiking is the main way; hire a local guide for longer trails. A car is useful but a 4×4 is recommended for the unpaved road to Capão.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake, hug or cheek kiss (one in São Paulo, two in Rio); avoid: Being stiff with new acquaintances
- Gestures: Use thumbs-up freely; avoid: The OK hand sign (it is rude)
- Language: Try Portuguese; say obrigado/obrigada; avoid: Defaulting to Spanish
- Time: Expect relaxed social punctuality; avoid: Being late for tours and flights
- Beach: Bring only a towel, cash and a copy of your ID; avoid: Leaving things unattended
Scams and watch-outs
- Rainy season (Nov–Feb) can make trails slippery and waterfalls dangerous; check conditions before hiking.
- No ATM in Palmeiras? Bring enough cash from Lençóis or a larger town; cards accepted at some pousadas but not everywhere.
- Mobile reception is limited in the park and Vale do Capão; download maps offline.
- Guides are required for some trails (e.g., Vale do Pati); arrange in advance through your accommodation.
Palmeiras is a quiet town with low crime; the main risks are on the trails — slippery rocks, sudden weather changes, and getting lost. Hire a guide for remote hikes.
