Palmdale sits in the Mojave Desert at the north end of Los Angeles County, about 70 mi (113 km) from Downtown LA on Highway 14. It is the self-styled Aerospace Capital of America: Air Force Plant 42 and the two airparks next door are the reason to come. The city itself is a car-dependent commuter town with chain retail, so most travellers use it as a desert base for the Antelope Valley, Saddleback Butte and the San Andreas Fault outcrop, not as a sightseeing city.

Get around
A car is close to essential: sights are spread across the valley and buses are slow. AVTA runs the local bus network on major roads, roughly every 15–20 min, with transfer hubs at the Antelope Valley Mall and the Palmdale Transportation Center. Taxis must be phoned ahead — you cannot flag one down. Rental desks are off-airport; most companies collect you.
