Palmarin
Go for 2 nights if you want mangroves, salt flats and empty beach without the delta's boat traffic; skip if you need a town, bars or a bank.
Palmarin is a 17 km rural peninsula on the southern Petite Côte, five Sereer villages strung between the Atlantic and a 10,430-hectare community reserve of mangrove channels, salt flats and grassland. There is no town centre: you sleep in a lodge, move by charrette or 4x4, and the day is beach, reserve and fishing village. Two nights is the useful minimum; three if you add the delta.

Get around
No taxis or buses inside Palmarin. Lodges arrange a car and driver, or you hire a charrette (horse cart) with a guide for village-to-village and reserve trips. Distances along the peninsula are short but sandy; walking between villages is possible in the dry season, slow in the heat. Pirogues cover the water side.

Scams and watch-outs
- The road south of Joal turns to laterite and is rough; in the rainy season it can be impassable without a 4x4.
- There is no bank or ATM in Palmarin: bring cash from Mbour, Joal or Dakar.
- Health facilities are basic; the nearest reliable clinic is outside the peninsula.
- Malaria is present: take advice on prophylaxis and use repellent after dusk.
- Agree the price of a charrette, guide or pirogue trip before you set off.
- Some listed lodges and phone numbers date from older listings: confirm before you travel.
Rural and calm, with the usual petty-theft caution in villages and on the beach. The real risks are the laterite road in the wet season, no ATM, basic health care and malaria after dusk.
