Palekastro
Half-day to one night: see the Minoan ruins, swim at Hiona or Kouremenos beach, eat fresh fish. Not a base for eastern Crete — Sitia has more services.
Palekastro is a quiet, rural village on Crete's far east coast, known for the Minoan town of Roussolakkos, long sandy beaches and a handful of family-run tavernas. It works as a half-day stop between Sitia and Vai or as a one-night beach break. The village has no luxury hotels and limited nightlife.

Scams and watch-outs
- Many tavernas and shops close from November to March.
- No bank or ATM in Palekastro: bring cash from Sitia or Agios Nikolaos.
- Hiona Beach has no shade: bring an umbrella.
