Palacios
Palacios, Texas
Give Palacios one night, two at most: bird the bay at dawn, walk the 1.5-mile seawall, eat shrimp, then move on along SH-35.
Palacios is a small Matagorda Bay town of about 5,000 people, 1.5–2 hours southwest of Houston on SH-35, and it calls itself the Shrimp Capital of Texas. It is a birding and seafood stop rather than a resort: the bay, the seawall, a shrimping fleet and a handful of historic buildings fill a day, and the surrounding marshes and beaches fill a second. Most travellers pass through by car; there is no beach resort strip and no big hotel cluster.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer heat and humidity are severe; birding and the seawall are best at dawn.
- Hurricane season runs June–November: check forecasts and evacuation routes before a coastal stay.
- Small-town hours: many kitchens close by mid-afternoon and some places shut early in the week.
- Restaurant and museum hours change seasonally — confirm before you drive out.
Palacios is a small, low-crime town; the real risks are summer heat, storms and long unlit drives. Keep water in the car, watch for hurricane-season warnings and lock up as you would anywhere.
