Pahrump
Stop for one night only if you are driving Las Vegas to Death Valley; skip it as a base — the sights are thin and the town is a service stop.
Pahrump is an unincorporated exurb of Las Vegas, about 100 km west of the city on NV-160 and near the California line. It has a handful of hotel-casinos, a small museum, a winery and a motor resort, but no major sight. Most travellers use it as a cheap bed on the Las Vegas to Death Valley drive, or skip it entirely.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer daytime highs average around 100°F (38°C) June–August; carry water.
- Gambling is 21+ with valid photo ID; under-18s face a curfew.
- Foreign visitors winning big at slots can face a 30% IRS withholding — keep the 1042-S form to reclaim it.
- Cell signal is patchy on NV-372 toward Death Valley; download offline maps.
Low street crime for a US town of its size; the real risks are summer heat, long empty desert drives and unlit roads at night. Keep water in the car and don't gamble past your limit.
