Paarl
Give Paarl one full day or one night as a Winelands stop between Cape Town and Stellenbosch: the language monument, a wine estate and the granite rock.
Paarl is South Africa's third-oldest town, about 60 km north-west of Cape Town on the N1, and the middle of the Cape Winelands. Its draw is the Afrikaans Language Monument on Paarl Rock, a 12-km main road of Cape Dutch and later architecture, and wine estates that see fewer tour buses than Stellenbosch or Franschhoek. A car makes it work; without one, the town is awkward.

Get around
A rented car is the practical choice: sights and estates are spread along a 12-km main road and out into the valley. Metrorail commuter trains run from Cape Town to Huguenot station, but services are aimed at commuters and are not a sightseeing tool. Minibus taxis cover local routes; agree the fare first.
