Oyen
Stop for one night if you are driving Highway 9 between Calgary and Saskatoon; skip it as a destination — there is no scheduled air or rail service.
Oyen is a town of about 1,000 people on Highway 41, 4.5 km south of its junction with Highway 9, near the Saskatchewan boundary. It exists as a supply centre for grain farms and oil and gas crews, and travellers meet it as a fuel-and-bed stop on the Calgary–Saskatoon drive. The museum, a golf course and pronghorn country are the reasons to get out of the car; everything else is a service stop.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- Distances are long and services are sparse: fill the tank at Oyen or at the Highway 9/41 junction before heading east or south.
- Winter driving on Highway 9 and Highway 41 means snow, ice and blowing snow; check road conditions before you set out.
- Cell coverage thins out on the back roads between towns; download offline maps.
- The museum runs May–August only, and closes for lunch in the middle of the day.
A quiet prairie town; the real risks are the drive (long empty highways, winter ice, wildlife at dusk) and summer heat with little shade. Standard precautions are enough in town.
