Oxford airport to city centre: trains, buses, taxis and costs

Oxford sits between London and the Midlands, so the airport question is really a choice of gateway. Heathrow is closest and has a direct coach link. Gatwick, Luton, Stansted and Birmingham all work but add a change in London, Reading or Birmingham.

Every time and fare below is a 2026 estimate and needs checking against the operator before you book. Advance train tickets bought 4–12 weeks ahead are far cheaper than walk-up fares, which is the single biggest saving on this route.

The direct coach is the simplest option when it runs: it leaves from the central bus station between Terminals 2 and 3 and from outside other terminals, and drops you at Gloucester Green in the middle of Oxford. Journey time is about 1 h 30 outside peak hours; the M40 and A34 can add 30 minutes on a weekday morning. Route, terminal stops, times and fares all need checking before you travel.

The rail alternative is the RailAir coach to Reading, then a train to Oxford. It is usually a little slower overall but runs more often and is useful if coaches are full or you are heading onward by train.

A taxi or pre-booked transfer is the only sensible choice for late-night arrivals, heavy luggage or a group of three or four, where the per-person cost approaches the coach fare.

From Gatwick, the usual route is a train towards Reading and then a direct train to Oxford, around 2 h 15 in total. Coaches via London Victoria are cheaper but slower and involve a change. Confirm the change points and times when you book.

Luton and Stansted both sit north and east of London, so you cross London or take a coach to Oxford via the city. Budget three hours or more.

Birmingham can be the better option from the north: a train from Birmingham International into Birmingham New Street, then a CrossCountry service to Oxford. Allow for the airport-to-station transfer on top of the rail leg, and check Sunday frequencies.

Coach fares are the most predictable: roughly £25–35 from Heathrow, less if booked early. Advance train tickets from London Paddington to Oxford start around £10–20 but rise sharply on the day, when a single can cost £40–60. Treat all of these as 2026 estimates and check the operator's site.

Taxis are metered or fixed-price depending on the operator. From Heathrow expect £100–140; from Gatwick £130–170. A pre-booked transfer is usually cheaper than a rank taxi and gives you a fixed price.

If you are arriving late, an airport hotel plus a morning coach often costs less than a night taxi to Oxford.

Oxford station is a 10–15 minute walk from the main sights, or a short taxi ride. Gloucester Green coach station is closer still, right by the bus station and a few minutes from Cornmarket.

If you are heading to a hotel outside the centre, check whether it is on a bus route from Gloucester Green or the station before committing to a taxi.

Buy a return ticket if you are coming back to the same airport; it is usually cheaper than two singles, though not always on advance rail fares.
