Where to stay in Oxford: best neighborhoods and hotels

Oxford, Pennsylvania is a small borough in southern Chester County, about an hour southwest of Philadelphia by car. Almost all visitor beds sit in two bands: the borough itself, and the Route 1 commercial strip a few minutes south, where the chain hotels, gas stations and diners are.

If your trip is built around Longwood Gardens, the Brandywine Valley or a quiet base between Philadelphia and Lancaster, staying in Oxford is the practical choice. If you want to walk to dinner or catch a train into Philadelphia without driving, West Chester and Exton are better bases and still within a 25–35 minute drive.

There is no rail station in Oxford itself, so plan on a car. That single fact decides most bookings here.

Prices below are 2026 estimates for a standard double room in high season, before the 6% Pennsylvania sales tax and the local hotel occupancy tax. Weekend rates near Longwood Gardens in spring and at Christmas can run 30–50% higher, and graduation weekends in May fill the whole area.

Oxford borough is compact: a main street with a handful of cafés, pizzerias and shops, a few small inns and guesthouses, and free on-street parking. It suits travellers who want to park once and walk to breakfast. Room counts are small, so the borough sells out first on event weekends.

The Route 1 strip south of town is where the predictable chain hotels are — the kind with a pool, a hot breakfast and a parking lot at the door. It is not scenic, but it is cheap, quiet at night and five minutes from the highway, which matters if you are driving to Philadelphia, Wilmington or Lancaster.

West Chester is the region's best walkable base: a grid of 18th- and 19th-century streets, a dense restaurant strip and a university crowd. It costs more and parking is tighter, but you can leave the car at the hotel in the evening.

Exton is the transit play. It has a SEPTA regional rail station on the Paoli/Thorndale line with direct trains to Philadelphia's Center City, plus a large concentration of business hotels. Kennett Square, just south of Longwood Gardens, is the alternative if garden visits are the whole point of the trip.

For a first visit of two or three nights, Oxford borough or the Route 1 strip is the simplest answer. For four nights or more with city time mixed in, split the stay: two nights in Oxford for the gardens and countryside, two in West Chester or Exton for food and trains.

Budget roughly US$110–180 a night for a chain hotel on the Route 1 strip and US$120–200 in the borough, both 2026 estimates before tax. Inns and B&Bs in West Chester and Kennett Square run US$150–250. Add 6% Pennsylvania sales tax plus a local hotel tax, which varies by municipality — check the rate when you book.

Parking is free at nearly every hotel outside West Chester. If you are pricing a Philadelphia hotel instead, expect to add US$40–70 a night for parking, which usually makes a suburban base cheaper even with the drive.

Tipping is expected in the US: 18–22% at sit-down restaurants and US$1–2 a drink at bars.

Longwood Gardens timed-entry tickets and peak weekends drive demand; book both the ticket and the room early for spring and the Christmas display season.

Ask whether the hotel is on the Route 1 strip or in the borough — the two are 10 minutes apart and the difference matters if you planned to walk to dinner.

If you are flying in, Philadelphia International (PHL) is the usual arrival point; Baltimore/Washington (BWI) is a longer but sometimes cheaper alternative. Arrange a car or rideshare rather than relying on public transport to Oxford.
