Oxford, Pennsylvania
Oxford, PA
One night is enough: walk the Third Street historic core, eat, then use it as a cheap base for Longwood Gardens and Amish country.
Oxford is a small Chester County borough of about 5,700 people, roughly halfway between Philadelphia and Baltimore on the old stage road. Its draw is a walkable historic district, antique and thrift shops, and low room rates compared with West Chester or Kennett Square. Most travellers pass through in half a day or use it as a one-night stop.

Get around
Downtown is walkable end to end, but the historic district runs well over a mile north–south and east–west, so you may move the car once or twice. Route 1 bypasses the borough; a car is the practical way to reach anything outside the centre. SCCOOT runs to West Chester Monday–Friday except holidays and connects to SEPTA routes 92 and 104 and Krapf's "A" bus at West Chester Transportation Center.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- No train station: buses to West Chester run weekdays only, so a Sunday arrival means a car or a taxi.
- Route 1 bypasses downtown — do not expect services at the exit.
- Rural roads around the borough are unlit at night; watch for deer.
- Many small shops and antique dealers keep short or irregular hours: check before you drive out.
A quiet small town; the real risks are deer on unlit rural roads at night, ice on winter pavements and long waits for a taxi after the buses stop.
