Oviedo
Uviéu
Give Oviedo 2 nights: one full day for the old town and the pre-Romanesque churches on Monte Naranco, one for cider and the Camino Primitivo start.
Oviedo is the capital of Asturias, a compact cathedral city of about 220,000 people with a small, walkable old town and four UNESCO-listed pre-Romanesque churches on the hill above it. It is a food and cider city more than a monument city, and it works as a 2-night stop between the coast at Gijón and the mountains, or as the start of the Camino Primitivo. Most travellers see the centre in a day; the second day is for Monte Naranco and the cider houses on Gascona.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Two kisses on the cheek (right then left) between friends and when introduced socially; handshake in business; avoid: Being stiff — Spaniards stand close and touch arms
- Meal times: Late lunch and dinner; long sobremesa (chat after eating); avoid: Rushing to leave or asking for the bill with the last bite
- Noise: Join in the lively conversation; avoid: Reading loud voices as anger
- Siesta hours: Keep noise down in residential buildings 15:00–17:00 and after 23:00; avoid: Phone calls to people at lunch time
- Dress: Smart casual in cities; locals rarely wear shorts in Madrid in town; avoid: Swimwear or bare torsos away from the beach
- Regional pride: Ask about local dishes and festivals; avoid: Assuming Catalan or Basque are dialects of Spanish
Scams and watch-outs
- Rain is the default from October to April: bring a waterproof, not an umbrella.
- Cider is poured from height and only a mouthful at a time; a shared bottle is normal, a full glass is not.
- Many old-town bars close one day a week and shut the kitchen around 16:00; check before you walk.
- Santa María del Naranco and San Miguel de Lillo keep short, tour-based hours and close on some weekdays: check the day before.
Oviedo is a calm, low-crime city; the real risks are wet cobbles, pickpockets in the Fontán market crowd, and cider that is stronger than it tastes.

Cider is poured from above the head into the glass; a splash in the bottom is the whole pour.
