Oulu
Uleåborg
Give Oulu 1–2 nights: a walkable centre, Nallikari beach and the 2026 Capital of Culture programme. More only if you add Hailuoto or the coast.
Oulu is the biggest city in Northern Finland and the European Capital of Culture for 2026, on the main north–south rail line about 6–8 hours from Helsinki. The centre is small and walkable, the sea and Nallikari beach are a short bus ride away, and the city works as a stopover between Helsinki and Lapland or as a base for the Bothnian coast. Winter is cold and dark; summer brings the midnight sun and the best conditions for walking and cycling.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Firm handshake, eye contact, short and direct; avoid: Hugs and long small talk with strangers
- Silence: Let pauses be pauses; avoid: Filling every quiet moment
- Sauna: Shower first, ask before throwing water on the stones; avoid: Swimsuits in nude-only saunas, or nudity in mixed ones marked otherwise
- Home visit: Shoes off; bring flowers or pastries; avoid: Keeping shoes on indoors
- Personal space: Keep a metre's distance in queues; avoid: Sitting next to a stranger when other seats are free
- Promises: Mean what you say; Finns will; avoid: Polite 'let's meet sometime' you do not intend
Scams and watch-outs
- Winter is genuinely cold: −20 °C and below is normal in Jan–Feb, so bring a proper coat, hat and gloves.
- In the city centre not all buses stop at all stops: lines 1–17 use Kaupungintalo, lines 20–57 use Pekuri, and the airport buses 8 and 9 do not stop at Pekuri.
- Cash bus fares double after 23:00 and night services are limited.
- Midsummer (late June) closes many shops and restaurants for a day or two.
- Check the Capital of Culture 2026 programme for dated events and ticketed venues before you plan around them.
Oulu is a low-crime city and safe to walk at night in the centre. The real risks are winter cold and ice on pavements, dark roads outside the centre, and the long gap between buses in the evening.
