Otranto
Give Otranto one night, two at most: the old town is a half-day, the sea and the coast road are the rest. Base here only if you have a car.
Otranto is Italy's easternmost town, a walled centre of about 5,700 people on the Adriatic side of Salento. The cathedral, the castle and the sea walls take half a day; the bauxite quarry, Punta Palascìa and the coast road south to Porto Badisco fill the other half. Most travellers see it as a night between Lecce and Santa Maria di Leuca, or as a small seaside base with a car.

Get around
On foot inside the walls: the whole old town is 10 minutes end to end. A car is what unlocks the coast road, the bauxite quarry and Punta Palascìa; without one you are on the FSE train to Lecce, local buses and taxis. The old town is a ZTL (limited traffic zone) — leave the car outside it.

- Many small B&Bs and restaurants close or cut hours from November to March: check before booking a winter trip.
A small, calm seaside town; the real risks are the summer sun, ZTL camera fines and unlit coastal paths after dark. Swimming is safe in the bay but watch the rocks and the boat traffic near the port.
