Otago splits in two. Coastal Otago runs along SH 1 with Dunedin at its centre: a Victorian city, a harbour, and a peninsula of albatross and penguin colonies. Central Otago sits inland and higher, drier and more continental, with stone gold-rush towns, orchards, and Pinot Noir vineyards around Alexandra and Cromwell. The Queenstown-Lakes district is a separate region on this site. Pick one half as your base and drive the other as a loop; trying to cover both from one bed means 3–4 hours at the wheel each day.

- Continental: hot dry summers, crisp cold winters, frosts into spring. Snow possible Jun–Aug.
Dec–Mar is peak for both halves and for the rail trail; book beds and shuttles ahead. Autumn (Mar–Apr) is quieter with fruit harvest and vine colour.
