Oswego
Give Oswego one full day and one night: Fort Ontario, the harbor museums and a lakefront sunset. Two nights only if you fish the river or catch Harborfest.
Oswego is a small Lake Ontario port city in Central New York, about 45 minutes by car from Syracuse. Its draw is compact and historic: a fort on the lake bluff, a harbor with three small museums, a canal terminus and a river known for fall salmon runs. Most visitors see it in a day; anglers, boaters and festival-goers stay longer. You need a car or the Centro bus from Syracuse, because rail and air connections sit in Syracuse.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Lake-effect snow can close roads between November and March; check conditions before driving in from Syracuse.
- Winter wind off Lake Ontario makes the waterfront much colder than inland Syracuse.
- Some harbor and fort sites run seasonal hours or close in winter: check before you go.
- Fishing access along the river is regulated; check current New York State rules and seasons.
- Sales tax is added at checkout; posted menu prices are not the total.
Oswego is a small, low-crime city; the real risks are winter driving, cold lake wind and unlit waterfront paths after dark. Watch for slippery pier and breakwater surfaces.
