Osterwieck
Go for half a day, not a base: walk the timber-framed old town in 2–3 hours, then sleep in Wernigerode or Halberstadt.
Osterwieck is a small Harz-foreland town on the Ilse with one of Germany's densest surviving timber-framed old towns: roughly 400 listed Fachwerk houses, about half of them built before 1720. There is no railway station, so you arrive by bus or car from Halberstadt, Wernigerode or Vienenburg. The old town is the reason to come; two to three hours on foot covers it, and the surrounding villages add castles, a watchtower and a wind farm.
