Osório
Skip Osório as a destination: use it only as a BR-101/BR-290 junction stop for fuel or a quick meal. The beaches and lagoon are better reached from nearby towns.
Osório is a small city on the BR-101 and BR-290 crossroads in Rio Grande do Sul, 90 km east of Porto Alegre. It has a handful of museums and a lagoon, but most travellers pass through on the way to the coast or the Serra Gaúcha. Half a day is enough if you stop; otherwise drive on.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake, hug or cheek kiss (one in São Paulo, two in Rio); avoid: Being stiff with new acquaintances
- Gestures: Use thumbs-up freely; avoid: The OK hand sign (it is rude)
- Language: Try Portuguese; say obrigado/obrigada; avoid: Defaulting to Spanish
- Time: Expect relaxed social punctuality; avoid: Being late for tours and flights
- Beach: Bring only a towel, cash and a copy of your ID; avoid: Leaving things unattended
Scams and watch-outs
- BR-101 and BR-290 are heavy truck routes; drive defensively.
- The beaches (Atlântida Sul, Mariápolis) are quiet but have no lifeguards: check conditions before swimming.
- Museum opening hours are irregular: call ahead or check the city hall website.
Osório is generally safe, but as anywhere in Brazil, keep valuables out of sight and avoid walking alone at night in empty areas. The main risk is traffic on the highways.
