Osijek
Give Osijek one full day and two nights as a Slavonia base: Tvrđa on foot, Kopački Rit if you have a third day, then Vukovar or Đakovo.
Osijek is Slavonia's biggest city and its transport hub, on the Drava about 20 km from the Danube. The draw is compact: the baroque fortress quarter of Tvrđa, a river promenade, a 90 m cathedral spire and the wetlands of Kopački Rit 15 km north. Two nights covers the city; add a night if you want the nature park and a Vukovar day trip. It is cheaper than the coast and far quieter.

Get around
The centre is flat and walkable: Upper Town to Tvrđa is about 15 minutes on foot. Trams (three main lines) and local buses cover the rest; buy tickets from the driver or a stored-value card. Taxis run from the station and airport. Bicycles work well on the riverside routes.

- Do not walk into woodland off marked trails near former conflict areas; obey any mine warning signs.
