Use Osh as the southern hub for the Fergana Valley and the start of the Pamir Highway into Tajikistan; one night covers Sulaiman-Too and the bazaar before you move on.
Osh is Kyrgyzstan's second city and, by local tradition, one of Central Asia's oldest settlements at over 3,000 years. Sulaiman-Too, a sacred rocky outcrop rising straight out of the city with a small mosque and museum tunnelled into the rock, is UNESCO-listed, and the sprawling Jayma Bazaar along the river is one of the region's largest markets. It also functions as the practical starting point for the Pamir Highway south into Tajikistan.

Scams and watch-outs
- Land borders with Uzbekistan and Tajikistan can close or change entry rules with little notice; check current status before relying on a crossing.
- Roads south towards the Pamir Highway are rough and mountain passes can close for weather; build in slack time.
- Permits are required for some border and high-altitude areas on the route into Tajikistan; arrange these before you leave Osh.
- Carry cash; card acceptance is limited outside the main hotels.
