Osaka is a flat, late-night food city with the easiest airport in Kansai: sleep in Namba for a late KIX landing, in Umeda for rail day-trips.
Osaka forgives what Kyoto punishes. It is flat, the subway has elevators almost everywhere, and dinner runs late. The traps are different: Namba crowds after 18:00, Osaka Castle's keep closing earlier than the park, and treating Umeda and Namba as one neighbourhood — they are 15 minutes apart by subway and a different trip.

- KIX to Namba is the easiest late landing in Japan: one Nankai train, 40 minutes, flat walk — until about 23:00.

Subway for everything inside the city, walking inside a district, JR and private railways for day trips, taxis after midnight or with bags. Osaka Metro, JR West and five big private railways share one IC card; the planning is choosing the right station building and exit.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Escalators: Stand on the right and leave the left clear for walkers; it flips back to the left in Kyoto and Tokyo.
- Kushikatsu sauce: Dip each skewer once in the shared sauce pot; use the cabbage leaves to scoop more on.
- Eating on the street: Eat at the stall or its bench in Kuromon and Dōtonbori; carry rubbish to the next bin or back to the stall.
- Trains: Phones on silent, no calls; backpacks in front or on the rack; queue at the marked lines.
- Temples and shrines: Bow at the gate, rinse hands at the basin, and take shoes off where there is a step up.
- Tipping: Not done; staff will return the money.
- Tattoos: Many public baths, pools and gyms refuse visible tattoos; Spa World and some sentō allow them (check the rule at each).
Red lines
- Do not block Ebisu-bashi bridge for photos.
- Kuromon Market: eat at the stall that sold it, not while walking.
Scams and watch-outs
- Touts in Namba and Shinsekai inviting you into bars: prices and seat charges are not shown up front — walk on.
- Unlicensed guides offering 'free' tours near Dōtonbori: use booked tours only.
