Ormskirk
Give Ormskirk half a day on a Liverpool–Preston rail hop: parish church, market, gingerbread. Sleep in Liverpool or Southport, not here.
Ormskirk is a small market town on a sandstone ridge 13 miles north of Liverpool, with a rare church that has both a tower and a spire, a Thursday and Saturday market, and a documented gingerbread tradition. Two Michelin-starred kitchens sit two miles away in Aughton. It works as a half-day rail stop between Liverpool and Preston, or as a cheap bed for Aintree race days, not as a base for a Lancashire holiday.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Skelmersdale has had no railway since 1956; a restored link is planned but not built — do not plan around it.
- Stagecoach bus 2 bypasses the town on its way to Southport: take 2A if you want Ormskirk.
- Market days are Thursday and Saturday only; the artisan market is the first Sunday of the month.
- Rufford Old Hall keeps short winter hours and closes some weekdays — check before travelling.
- Bank-holiday Motorfest fills Coronation Park and the car parks; book beds early.
A quiet, low-crime market town; the real issues are wet pavements, unlit lanes after dark and late trains back from Liverpool. Standard UK advice applies.
