Give Orleans 2 nights as a Lower Cape base: Nauset surf on the ocean side, calm Skaket sunsets on the bay side, both within 10 minutes' drive.

Orleans sits at the elbow of Cape Cod, where Route 6 meets Route 6A and Route 28, and it is the only Lower Cape town with good beaches on both the Atlantic and the bay. It is small and car-dependent: you come for the water, the bike path and a slower pace, not for a sightseeing checklist. Two nights covers the beaches and one day trip; three nights lets you add Provincetown or a whale watch without rushing.

Get around

A car is close to essential: beaches, the rail trail and restaurants are 5–15 minutes apart and buses are limited. The Cape Cod Rail Trail runs through town for cycling. Plymouth & Brockton buses stop in Hyannis, about 30–40 minutes away, so a car-free trip means taxis or rideshares for the last leg.

English everywhere, with strong regional accents; Spanish is the second language in the Southwest, Texas, Florida, California and New York. Some words differ from British English: restroom (toilet), check (bill), gas (petrol), trunk (boot), first floor (ground floor).

  • Nauset has real surf and rip currents: swim near lifeguards, which are seasonal.
  • Many restaurants and inns close or cut hours from November to April; check before booking.
  • Cell coverage is fine in town but patchy on some beach and trail stretches.

Very safe for a US beach town. The real risks are water and roads: rip currents at Nauset, sunburn, and Route 6 traffic at the rotary in summer.
