Give Orlando 4–5 nights if you want two parks plus a rest day; 2–3 nights if you are here for one park or a convention.

Orlando is the theme-park capital of the world, with an estimated 52 million visitors a year, and most of the big draws sit outside the city limits: Walt Disney World is in Lake Buena Vista, SeaWorld is to the southwest, and only Universal Orlando is inside the city. Plan around one resort cluster per day, not around downtown. A car or a rideshare budget matters more here than in most US cities, because the parks are 20–30 km from the centre and buses are slow.

About 12.5 mi (20 km) southeast of downtown; the state's busiest airport and the main gateway.

About 28 mi (45 km) northeast, in Sanford; Allegiant, Flair and tour-operator charters.
DAB · Daytona Beach International Airport
About 1.5 h drive; a fallback if fares are lower.
TPA · Tampa International Airport
About 80 mi (130 km) west; useful if you also plan the Gulf coast.

Get around

A car or rideshare is the practical default: the parks are 20–30 km apart and Lynx buses are slow. Lynx fares are $2 a ride with free transfers within 90 minutes, $4.50 for a day pass and $16 for 7 days (check). SunRail commuter rail links downtown, Winter Park and Kissimmee but does not serve the parks and does not run on Sundays. Brightline runs from MCO to Miami in about 3.5 h via West Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale.

Scams and watch-outs

  • Summer heat indices commonly reach 38 °C (100 °F) and daily thunderstorms start in June: plan indoor or water time for early afternoon.
  • Winter cold fronts drop lows near freezing a few mornings a year; bring a jacket Nov–Mar.
  • MCO security lines can exceed an hour in summer and around holidays: arrive 2–3 h before departure.
  • Parking at the big resorts is charged per day; check your hotel's resort fee and parking fee before booking.
  • Rideshare surge pricing after park close is real: book before the fireworks end or wait 30 minutes.

Orlando is a normal US city for tourists: the parks and hotel districts are well policed, and the real risks are heat, afternoon lightning, heavy traffic on I-4 and petty theft from cars and pool decks. Downtown and the International Drive strip get rowdy late on weekends; keep to lit areas and use rideshare after midnight.
