Orford
Base here 1–2 nights if you want the castle, the Ness and smoked fish on foot; day-trippers from Woodbridge or Aldeburgh get the castle and quay in 3–4 hours.
Orford is a small Suffolk coast village between the River Ore and a 10-mile shingle spit, Orford Ness. The castle, the quay, the church and the smokehouse sit within a 10-minute walk of each other, so one night covers it and two nights let you add the Ness ferry and a river trip. There is no railway station: you arrive by car, bus or bike, or via Wickham Market station about 10 miles away.

Get around
The village is small enough to walk end to end in about 15 minutes. Bikes work well on the quiet lanes and the sea walls; Regional Cycle Route 41 passes through and links to National Cycle Route 51 at Felixstowe and Route 1 near Bruisyard. For Orford Ness you must use the National Trust ferry from the quay. A car is the practical way to reach Aldeburgh, Woodbridge, Snape and the forests.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- No railway station: the nearest is Wickham Market (Campsea Ashe), about 10 miles away, so plan a taxi or bus link.
- Mobile signal is patchy: as of 2022 only EE had 4G here and 5G had not arrived — download maps and tickets before you come.
- Orford Ness has no food or drink for sale and no bikes or dogs: carry your own water and food.
- The Ness ferry runs Apr–Oct only and the spit is exposed: wind, sun and shingle underfoot.
- The Butley foot ferry runs weekends and bank holidays, late Apr–end Sep, 11:00–16:00, and you should call ahead to confirm it is running.
- Several restaurants and the smokehouse keep seasonal hours: check before you build a day around them.
A quiet, low-crime village; the real risks are the tidal River Ore, slippery shingle and sea walls, and long stretches of the Ness with no shelter or phone signal. Tell someone your route and carry water.
