Oregon City
Oregon City, Oregon
Give Oregon City one day, not a night: the elevator, the falls viewpoint and the End of the Oregon Trail center fit a half-day loop from Portland.
Oregon City is where the Oregon Trail ended and the Oregon Territory was governed from 1848 to 1851. The historic downtown sits on a bluff above Willamette Falls, the second-largest waterfall by volume in the United States after Niagara. It is 30-45 minutes from downtown Portland by car or TriMet bus, so most travellers see it as a day trip rather than a base.

Get around
Downtown is compact and hilly: the free Municipal Elevator links the lower riverside level to the bluff-top promenade, so you can walk between the falls viewpoint and Main Street without climbing. TriMet bus 33 runs along the east side of the Willamette and bus 35 along the west side between Portland and Oregon City. Amtrak Cascades stops at Oregon City station (1757 Washington St) twice daily toward Portland and Eugene, but there is no ticket machine, so buy online or at another station. A car makes the falls viewpoints, the interpretive centre and the forest easy; without one you are limited to the downtown core.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Amtrak's Oregon City stop has no ticket machine: buy online or at another station before you travel.
- Willamette Falls is best seen from the viewpoint below the Museum of the Oregon Territory or from the McLoughlin Promenade; there is no safe close-up access to the falls themselves.
- The former paper mill site by the falls is under redevelopment: expect construction fencing and check access before you go.
- Summer wildfire smoke can cut visibility in the Willamette Valley; check air quality before a falls-viewpoint trip.
- Downtown streets are steep and some sidewalks are uneven; the elevator is the easy way between levels.
Oregon City is a low-risk small city; the real issues are rain-slick steep streets, occasional downtown car break-ins, and summer wildfire smoke. Standard US precautions apply.
