Give Orchha two nights: one day for the fort and temples, one for the river cenotaphs and the island walk. Skip it if you only have a Jhansi rail stop.
Orchha is a small Bundela capital on the Betwa river, 15 km from Jhansi, with a fort complex, a working Ram temple and 14 riverside cenotaphs. The town is walkable in a day, but two nights let you see it at dawn and dusk, when the light and the crowds are best. Most travellers reach it by train to Jhansi, then a car or shared auto-rickshaw.

The town is small enough to walk everywhere; the fort, Ram Raja Mandir and the market are within 15 minutes of each other. A cycle rickshaw around town is about ₹50 (2026 estimate). Scams and watch-outs
- Buy the combined monument ticket at the fort first: it covers the other sights and is checked at each one.
- Orchha railway station is 5 km out of town with very few trains; Jhansi is the practical railhead.
- Phool Bagh was closed for reconstruction as of 2025: check before you plan around it.
- No photography inside Ram Raja Mandir; it also closes in the afternoon.
- Fake antique coins are sold in the market; assume any 'old' coin is a copy.
Orchha is a small, low-crime town and safe to walk by day. The real risks are heat in April–June, uneven fort steps, monkeys on the island walk, and touts at Jhansi station: agree the fare before you get in.
