Orbost
Give Orbost one night as a Princes Highway stopover, or skip it and push on to Lakes Entrance or Mallacoota: the town itself is a 2-hour walk.
Orbost is a Snowy River town of about 2,200 people on the Princes Highway in East Gippsland, roughly 4–5 hours by road east of Melbourne and a gateway to the Victorian ski fields. There is no train and no local public transport; you come by car or by V/Line coach, and you stay because you are breaking a long drive, not because there is a sight list. One night covers the river walk, Forest Park and a pub meal.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- It gets cold here year-round: 3 °C nights are possible even in summer. Pack a warm layer and check weather warnings before heading for the snow country.
- There is no passenger train to Orbost and has not been for years, whatever a maps app tells you. The rail line is a cycling and walking trail.
- Fuel, food and phone coverage thin out east of town: fill up and carry water before the Cann River and Mallacoota stretches.
- Mobile coverage is patchy outside town; download offline maps before you leave Bairnsdale.
A quiet country town and safe by any normal measure; the real risks are the drive (kangaroos and fatigue on the Princes Highway), the cold, and summer bushfire weather — check warnings before you travel.
