Orbetello
Use Orbetello as a base for the Maremma coast, Argentario and Saturnia: two nights if you want beaches and day-trips, one night if you are passing through on the Aurelia.
Orbetello sits on a lagoon peninsula between the Argentario promontory and the Maremma plain, with beaches on the Feniglia and Giannella tombolos. The town itself is quiet, with a cathedral, ancient walls and a windmill on the lagoon. Most visitors use it as a hub for the coast, the Etruscan ruins of Cosa, the Saturnia hot springs and the hill towns of Pitigliano and Capalbio.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Say buongiorno (until mid-afternoon) or buonasera on entering shops and bars; avoid: Walking in and pointing without a greeting
- Cheek kisses: Two kisses, right cheek first, among friends; follow their lead; avoid: Kissing strangers or in business settings
- Dress: Smart-casual in cities; covered shoulders and knees in churches; avoid: Beachwear, bare chests and flip-flops away from the beach
- Queues: At delis and pharmacies take a number (numerino); avoid: Assuming the crowd at a bar counter is chaos — pay at the till first where asked
- Restaurants: Wait to be seated and ask for the bill; avoid: Splitting a bill item by item with a large group
- Conversation: Food, football and family are safe openers; avoid: Mafia jokes and north–south stereotypes
- Dinner at a home: Bring pastries, wine or flowers (not chrysanthemums, which are for funerals); avoid: Refusing seconds too firmly
Scams and watch-outs
- ZTL (limited traffic zone) in the old centre: check signs and hotel parking before driving in.
- Beach parking fills by 10:00 in July and August; arrive early or use the free shuttle from the town.
- Saturnia hot springs are free and open 24 h, but the main pool can be crowded; go early or late.
- Mosquitoes near the lagoon at dusk: bring repellent.
Orbetello is a safe small town. Watch for mosquitoes at dusk, ZTL fines in the old centre and summer crowds on the beaches. The lagoon is not for swimming; use the sea beaches.
