Oranjestad

Oranjestad is a half-day town from your beach: the fort and the museum in a morning before the heat, Main Street for lunch, the marina at sunset, and a look at the cruise calendar so you do not share it with ships.

The capital is small, flat and hot, with a harbour at the front and a marina next door. The trips that go wrong walk the waterfront at midday on ship day, plan a Sunday errand when shops are shut, or forget that the wind hides the sun. Four small clusters cover the town; the beach is the sleep base and Oranjestad is a taxi-and-walk morning.

AUA to Oranjestad or the beaches: one licensed taxi at the government fare, 10–30 minutes; the risk is a late flight, when the rank thins, and the entry form you must have done before you fly.

Local lunch counters and small cafés near Main Street: go before 13:00 for a plate of the day, in cash or by card; many close in the afternoon and on Sundays.

Eagle Beach
The usual beach base: wide sand, hotels and restaurants on the road behind it, and a short taxi or bus to Oranjestad for a morning.
Oranjestad town centre
The night before an early boat or flight, or for a town-only stay: everything is a walk away, but pick a hotel with a staffed desk; most visitors sleep on the beaches instead.

Language

Papiamento is the everyday language, a Creole with Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch and African roots. Dutch is used in schools and government, and nearly everyone in tourism speaks English; Spanish is common because of Venezuela and Colombia next door.

  • 'Bon dia' (good morning), 'bon tardi' (afternoon), 'danki' (thank you), 'bon bini' (welcome).
  • Aruba spells it Papiamento; Curaçao and Bonaire spell it Papiamentu, with different spelling rules.

Etiquette, safety and scams

Etiquette

  • Greeting: Say 'bon dia' or 'good morning' when entering shops; avoid: Launching straight into a request
  • Dress: Cover up off the beach; avoid: Swimwear in supermarkets and town
  • Driving: Give way on roundabouts; drive slowly in villages; avoid: Off-roading outside marked tracks
  • Language: Use a few Papiamento words; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks Dutch

Red lines

  • Cover up outside the beach: swimwear only at the beach.
  • Do not leave bags in parked cars at the waterfront.
  • Ask before photographing people.

Scams (Aruba page)

  • Copycat ED card websites: Only edcardaruba.aw; the official card is free apart from the US$20 fee.
  • Timeshare pitches with free gifts: Decline; a 'free' breakfast becomes a 2-hour sales session.
  • Unlicensed tour boats and UTV operators: Book licensed operators through your hotel or with visible permits.
  • Taxi fares without agreement: Ask the fixed zone fare before getting in.
