Orange

Give Orange two nights with a car: one for the wine and food strip, one for Mount Canobolas and the orchards. Without a car, one night is enough.

Orange is a cool-climate wine and food town 3.5–4 hours west of Sydney, at 862 m on the Central Tablelands. It is not named after the fruit and citrus does not grow here; apples, stone fruit and grapes do. Most visitors come for cellar doors, autumn colour and Mount Canobolas. The town centre is walkable, but the vineyards, orchards, lake and mountain are spread over 25 km, so a car changes the trip completely.

By air

About 15 km from town; Rex and Qantas link Sydney (about 45–60 min), Link Airways flies Melbourne and Brisbane. Car hire desks are not permanently staffed: book ahead and they meet you.

Get around

Public transport covers the town only; there is no useful bus to the wineries, Mount Canobolas or Lake Canobolas. Plan on a car: hire at the airport (Avis, Hertz) or in town, and remember drop-off is often an unstaffed key box. A taxi from the airport into town is around A$40, so a day's hire can cost less. Driving is on the left; the A32 and Mitchell Highway are the main routes.

Sleep

Walk to cafés, pubs and the art gallery; motels and the main hotels are here. Best if you have no car.
East Orange / Borenore side
Vineyard stays and conference hotels on the eastern edge of town and along the Mitchell Highway; you need a car. Borenore itself is west of Orange, not east.
Nashdale and Canobolas foothills
Farm stays and vineyard cottages closest to the mountain and orchards; quiet, dark at night, car essential.

Orange is a small, low-crime inland city and feels safe at night in the centre. The real risks are rural: wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk, ice and snow closing Mount Canobolas in winter, and long drives after wine tastings.
