Ooty is a 19th-century British hill station at 2,240 m in the Nilgiris, reached by the UNESCO-listed Nilgiri Mountain Railway or a winding 3.5–4 h road from Coimbatore. The town itself is crowded and the sights are spread over 8–20 km, so most travellers do two nights and treat Coonoor, Kotagiri and the tea country as the real draw.
