Omeo
Use Omeo as one night on the Great Alpine Road, not a destination: 1 night, or a lunch-and-look stop between Bairnsdale and Bright.
Omeo is a small service town of about 400 people on the B500 Great Alpine Road, close to the snowline at the eastern end of the Victorian Alps. There is little to see in town; its value is beds, fuel and food between Bairnsdale and Mount Hotham, plus a mountain-bike park and two lookouts. Most trips pass through or sleep one night.

You need a car. Omeo has no local public transport; the town centre is small enough to walk in 10 minutes, but the lookouts, MTB park and alpine villages are a drive. Fuel up here before the Mount Hotham climb.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Distances are long and mobile coverage is patchy on the Great Alpine Road: carry water, fuel and a paper map.
- Snow and ice close or restrict the road above Omeo in winter; check VicRoads conditions before driving to Mount Hotham or Dinner Plain.
- Wildlife (kangaroos, wombats, deer) on the road at dawn and dusk: slow down.
- Beds and food are limited: in snow season and on long weekends, book ahead and expect cafés to close early.
Omeo is a quiet, low-crime country town; the real risks are the drive (wildlife, ice, long gaps between fuel), sudden alpine weather and patchy phone coverage.
