Omarama
Stay one night on the SH8 drive, or skip: book a glider flight or see Clay Cliffs, then move on — the town itself is 20 minutes.
Omarama is a 291-person Mackenzie Country junction town at the meeting of SH8 (Twizel–Cromwell) and SH83 (to Oamaru). It exists for two reasons: gliding, because the airfield sits under some of the best soaring conditions on the planet, and a bed on the long South Island drive. Two hours covers the town; a glider flight or a Clay Cliffs detour is what makes the stop worth a night.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Kia ora or a handshake; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; overlong small talk before business
- Marae visit: Wait to be called on, follow your guide through the pōwhiri, remove shoes before the meeting house; avoid: Eating or drinking inside the wharenui; walking in front of speakers
- Tables and heads: Keep bottoms off tables and hats off tables; food stays away from heads; avoid: Sitting on tables or kitchen benches; touching people's heads
- Roads: Pull over at slow-vehicle bays to let queues pass; wave thanks; avoid: Stopping on the road for photos; drifting right after a stop
- Outdoors: Carry out all rubbish; use toilets; stick to tracks; avoid: Feeding kea and other birds; toileting outside
- Talk: Self-deprecating humour and understatement; avoid: Calling New Zealanders Australians; boasting
- Home visit: Bring wine or something to share; shoes off if the hosts do; avoid: Arriving empty-handed to a 'bring a plate' event
- Names: Use Māori place names and pronounce them with care; avoid: Joking about Māori words or haka
Scams and watch-outs
- Fuel up in Twizel or Otematata: Omarama's station has limited hours.
- Clay Cliffs access is a gravel road with a per-vehicle fee at the gate; check conditions after rain.
- Gliding is weather-dependent — build in a spare morning or you may fly nothing.
- Winter nights drop below freezing; many cafés and the gliding operators run shorter hours or close.
Very safe. The real risks are the drive — long empty stretches, one-lane bridges, gravel on the Clay Cliffs road — and winter ice on SH8. Tell someone your route; phone coverage is patchy outside town.
