Set the phone up before you fly, not at arrivals. Download the ride app, sign in with a card that works abroad, and save your hotel address in Arabic script as well as English — many Muscat drivers navigate by landmark, not street number.
For driving days, download the offline Google Map of your whole route while you still have hotel Wi-Fi. Coverage drops in Wadi Bani Awf, the Wahiba Sands and on Jebel Shams and Jebel Akhdar, and a car with no signal and no cached map is a slow afternoon. A second offline map app is cheap insurance if you plan long interior loops.
For buses, the Mwasalat app covers intercity services; buy or check the timetable the day before, since frequencies are low outside the Muscat–Nizwa and Muscat–Sur corridors. Translation is rarely needed in cities and hotels, where English is widely spoken; it matters more at small garages, pharmacies and rural police checkpoints. Google Translate's offline Arabic pack is enough for that. WhatsApp is the practical channel for guides, desert camps and drivers, but voice and video calling on some apps has been restricted — check before you rely on it.
