Olomouc
Give Olomouc 1–2 nights: a walkable baroque centre, a UNESCO column and a 15th-century clock, at a fraction of Prague's crowds and prices.
Olomouc holds the country's second-largest historic zone after Prague, was Moravia's capital until 1641, and is a university city of about 100,000. Two hours by train from Prague, it works as a one- or two-night stop between Prague and Ostrava, or as a base for the Haná plain. The centre is flat and walkable in half a day; the rest is churches, museums and student bars.

Get around
The centre is flat and best on foot; everything in the old town is within about 20 minutes. Trams and buses (lines 10–52) are run by DPMO; buy tickets in the DPMO app or from machines at major hubs, and validate paper tickets once. Nextbike costs 1 Kč per minute with free unlocking — return the bike to a marked station or risk a 500 Kč fine. Taxis from the station to the centre run about 120–160 Kč; Bolt, Uber and Liftago also operate.

Scams and watch-outs
- Many student bars and clubs close for the summer university vacation: nightlife thins out in July and August.
- Don't cycle on sidewalks — it is not allowed in the Czech Republic.
- Some Nextbike stations are unmarked; check the app map before you leave the bike.
- Fast (R) trains from Ostrava can take a longer route through the Jeseníky mountains and run over 3 hours — check the routing before booking.
Olomouc is a calm, walkable city and one of the safer stops in the Czech Republic. The real risks are pickpockets in the main-square crowds, unlicensed taxis at the station, and late-night student bars — agree the fare or use an app.
