Olney
Olney, Maryland
Base in Rockville or Bethesda and drive out for one day: Olney has a theatre, a Quaker meeting house and a trail, no hotels.
Olney is a wealthy exurb of Washington, DC in northeast Montgomery County, 30–40 minutes by car up Georgia Avenue (MD-97). It grew from a Quaker farming community — Sandy Spring and Brookeville next door share that history — into a commuter town with a regional theatre, a farmers market and a short Underground Railroad walking trail. There are no hotels in Olney itself, so most visitors sleep in Rockville or Bethesda and drive out, or pass through on the way to somewhere else. Two to three hours covers the sights; a theatre evening or the adventure park stretches it to a half day.

Get around
A car is the practical way to move around Olney and between Sandy Spring, Brookeville and the parks; there is no local rail. Metrobus Z2 runs from Silver Spring Red Line station to the MD-97/MD-108 junction, and Y2/Y7/Y8 run from Glenmont station along Georgia Avenue — useful for arriving, awkward for sightseeing. Rideshare is available but sparse outside the town centre.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- No hotels in Olney: book in Rockville, Bethesda, Silver Spring or Gaithersburg and drive.
- Sights are spread over several km along MD-97 and MD-108; without a car you will spend the day waiting for buses.
- Some small museums and the Quaker meeting house open only a few days a week — check before you drive out.
- Summer afternoons are hot and humid; the Underground Railroad trail is exposed.
Olney is a low-crime, affluent suburb and feels safe day and night. The real risks are driving: Georgia Avenue and MD-108 carry fast commuter traffic, and deer cross the roads at dusk.
