Olinda
Base in Recife and give Olinda one full day on foot, or sleep one night up the hill for the Friday serenade and Carnival.
Olinda is a small colonial hill town 7 km north of central Recife, listed by UNESCO for its 16th- and 17th-century churches and convents. The historic centre is compact and walkable in half a day; the reason to stay is the evening music, the Saturday serenade and Carnival, when the streets fill with frevo and maracatu. Most travellers see it as a day trip from Recife and sleep there only for Carnival or a quiet night.

The historic centre is compact and steep; walk it. Local buses link Olinda with central Recife in about 30–40 min (main stop Praça do Carmo, easy to miss). Taxi or app car Recife centre to Olinda takes about 20 min. Olinda's own beach is polluted; go north to Pau Amarelo or Maria Farinha by bus instead.

- Craft prices near Alto da Sé are inflated; compare at Mercado da Ribeira.
- Steep, uneven cobbles: wear shoes with grip, not flip-flops, for the climb to Alto da Sé.
Olinda's historic centre is busy and generally fine by day; at night stay on lit streets, take a taxi or app car back to Recife, and keep phones out of sight. The beach is polluted, so the real risks are petty theft and the steep cobbles.
