Okotoks
Use Okotoks as a day trip from Calgary or a one‑night stop for Big Rock and riverside trails: about 18 km (≈20‑25 min) drive, half a day covers the town, a full day if you add the erratic (drive time check).
Okotoks is a commuter town on the Sheep River, 18 km south of Calgary, known for the Big Rock glacial erratic, a riverside trail network and a small historic downtown. Most visitors come for a few hours: walk the river, see the erratic, eat a meal. It works as a stop between Calgary and the Rockies or High River, not as a base.

Language
English is the working language in most of Canada; French dominates Québec and parts of New Brunswick and Ontario. Québec's language law (Bill 96) makes French the language of signs, menus and services; a 'Bonjour' first earns goodwill, and in Montréal most people switch to English easily.
- Metric system: km, °C, litres — but people often give heights in feet.
- 'Eh', 'toque' (winter hat), 'loonie' and 'toonie' (CAD 1 and 2 coins), 'double-double' (coffee with two cream, two sugar).
Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- Sheep River can flood in spring; check trail conditions after heavy rain.
Okotoks is a safe, low-crime town. The main risks are river flooding in spring and icy roads in winter; drive with care on Hwy 7.
