Oklahoma City
Give Oklahoma City 2 nights: one for Bricktown and the Memorial, one for the Adventure District. A car saves hours; without one, stay downtown.
Oklahoma City is the state capital and the biggest city on the Great Plains, spread over 1,600 km² — roughly the land area of Greater London with a fraction of the people. Almost everything a visitor wants sits in two clusters: downtown (Bricktown, the National Memorial, the art museum, Myriad Gardens) and the northeast Adventure District (zoo, cowboy museum, science museum). The city is car-first; downtown is walkable and has a streetcar, but the museum cluster needs a bus, a rideshare or a rental.

Get around
A car is the default: streets are a grid, interstates are usually free-flowing outside rush hour, and parking is cheap or free. Note that numbered streets run NW on the north side and SW on the south side — NW 23rd and SW 23rd are different places. Without a car, stay downtown: the OKC Streetcar loops downtown and Bricktown, Embark bus Route 050 (Downtown Discovery) links the Memorial, Bricktown and Myriad Gardens, and Route 003 runs to the zoo and science museum. Rideshare fills the gaps.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer heat: daytime highs average about 34°C with heat index near 36°C; carry water and plan indoor stops midday.
- Tornadoes and flash floods: April–May is peak season. Know your hotel's shelter and watch local warnings.
- Some blocks immediately around downtown are rough after dark — parts of NE 23rd and NE 36th, NW 10th, South Shields and South Robinson. Drive or rideshare through, don't walk.
- Last call is 02:00; liquor stores run six days a week 06:00–21:00, with Sunday hours set by county.
- Distances fool you: the metro is 1,600 km², so a 'nearby' museum can be a 25-minute drive.
Oklahoma City is generally safe for visitors who use normal city sense. The real risks are summer heat, spring tornadoes and flash floods, and a handful of blocks around downtown after dark — drive or rideshare through those, and lock the car.
